Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) - ISO 26000

Business and organizations do not operate in a vacuum. Their relationship to the society and environment in which they operate is a critical factor in their ability to continue to operate effectively. ISO 26000 provides guidance on how businesses and organizations can operate in a socially responsible way. It enables companies to develop and implement a system, including guidelines and instructions on the principles of Corporate Social Responsibility, covering all range of activities that should be managed by the company. These include: transparency, ethical behavior, compliance with legislation, respect for human rights, stakeholder needs and rules of international behavior. In addition, the model combines best practices from public and private corporate social responsibility initiatives. ISO 26000 is aimed at all types of organizations regardless of their activity, size or location. Currently the standard is not certifiable, it should be mentioned however that at national level, DS 26001 has developed in Denmark, with the possibility of certification, along with France, Spain and Portugal, that are about to issue the standard at a national levels.

Environmental Management Systems - ISO 14001

Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) were initiatives which stemmed from business, originally aimed at preventing penalties under emerging liability laws but rapidly became a reflection of business-government partnership. Today, it is an indication of business good citizenship. But the benefits of acquiring ISO certification go beyond the satisfaction of doing a good deed. Adhering to the standard not only result in better conformance to environmental regulations, but also greater marketability, better use of resources, higher quality goods and services, increased levels of safety, improved image and increased profits. The schemes are voluntary with third party certification process.

At core EMS is a systematic evaluation of participant business environmental performance against self-specified targets and objectives. BREEAM & LEED Assessment

BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is the world's foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings. The development started by Building Research Establishment (BRE) in 1988 and was launched in England in 1990. The international part was launched in 2008. BREEAM rates sustainable buildings in 10 categories: Management, Health & Wellbeing, Energy, Transport, Water, Materials, Waste, Land Use & Ecology, Pollution and Innovation.

Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) is the American version built on BREEAM success and popularity. LEED was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1999 and launched in 2000, it is the world’s second largest certification system for sustainable buildings and is recognized in many countries, e.g. LEED US, LEED Canada and LEED Emirates. LEED provides a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations, and maintenance solutions. Sustainable buildings are rated from 7 categories: Sustainable site, Water efficiency, Energy & atmosphere, Materials & resources, Indoor environmental quality, Innovation and Regional Priority.
